1. Reads through or listens to material in one language, ascertains understanding of the meaning and context of that material, and converts it into a second language, making sure to preserve the original meaning
2. Translates online, video, and television media by providing subtitles
3. Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues in order to understand specialised concepts and translate them appropriately
4. Refers to online translation tools for additional assistance with translation
5. Provides clients with quotes based on project length and level of complexity
6. Follows up with clients to ensure satisfaction and understanding
7. read through original material and rewrite it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained
8. research legal, technical and scientific phraseology to find the correct translation
9. liaise with clients to discuss any unclear points
10. proofread and edit final translated versions
11. provide quotations for translation services offered
12. consult with experts in specialist areas
13. retain and develop knowledge on specialist areas of translation
14. follow various translation-quality standards to ensure legal and ethical obligations to the customer.
15. Convert concepts in the source language to equivalent concepts in the target language
16. Compile information, such as technical terms used in legal settings, into glossaries and terminology databases to be used in translations
17. Speak, read, and write fluently in at least two languages, including English and one or more others
18. Relay the style and tone of the original language
19. use specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used
20. Render spoken messages accurately, quickly, and clearly
